Difficult to diagnose shifting and engagement issues? Check the compensator feed regulator valve.
The compensator feed regulator valve plays a critical role in managing clutch function and shift-feel in the 6L series. It supplies regulated pressure to the balance side of the rotating clutch drums. This is done to counteract the unintended apply of clutches due to the centrifugal forces of the residual oil in the apply chamber.
Ideally, this pressure and its resulting centrifugal forces cancel out the forces inside of the apply chamber, simplifying clutch apply calculations by the computer. If the pressure is too low or too high, it can dramatically affect shift quality. In cases of very high pressure, it can keep the on-coming clutch from applying resulting in a cut-loose.
